The Holocaust by Bullets is a term that refers to the mass murder of Jews and Roma in Eastern Europe during World War II. It is also the title of the memoir and investigation of Father Patrick Desbois, who has undertaken the mission of uncovering and documenting this lesser-known piece of the Holocaust. Between 1941-1944, mobile killing units slaughtered over two million Jews, largely by shooting. These murders took place just outside of the victims’ hometowns, with their neighbors watching and collaborating.
Yahad-in Unum is Father Desbois’s organization working to discover and educate about the details of the Holocaust by Bullets. The picture to the left illustrates a screenshot of their website’s interactive map of execution sites that they have discovered–1,978 total as of December 2022. Click here to see the interactive map.
